There is a rumor that a powered carpet puller can not pull up *unitary back carpet. While this is true of most carpet pullers it is not true of The Carpet Claw™. It will tear-out unitary back carpet easily if done correctly. Although The Carpet Claw™ can be operated by one person it is recommended that you use two people to make this an easier job.

Here is our how to for pulling up unitary back carpet with The Carpet Claw™.

1.We recommended that you cut the carpet with a jus push or utility knife into 4’ wide sections for easy removal. The   width of the strips is at your discretion, tougher adhesives may require smaller strips.
2.Starting in the corner, scrape up a small section of carpet.
3.Continue scraping width wise until you have enough carpet scraped up that “claw” will fit on it, plus 3” of pulled          carpet in front of it (see diagram).
4.Fold the carpet over so that it is face to face.
5.Place “the claw” on the backside of the loose section of the carpet, leave a 3” section of loose carpet in front of        “the claw”
6.Apply light pressure to “the claw”; be sure that all of the teeth are biting the back of your scraped up carpet. Do not apply so much pressure that the teeth are going through the face of your scraped up carpet.
7.Take the slack out of the line as the wench engages and begin pulling.
As you are pulling “the claw” is pushing on the section of carpet in front of it. This tension on the yarn holds the carpet together as it pulls (see diagram).

Throughout the tear out process tufts may stay attached to the floor. These tufts will need to be scraped loose as you go along to keep the carpet from unraveling.

Please note: Unitary back carpet must be pulled lengthwise.  Pulling any direction other than lengthwise will cause the carpet to tear off next to the wire.

* Unitary back carpet is used for glue-down installations. It has an application of high quality latex back coating to increase tuft bind performance without the addition of a secondary backing. This backing system is used primarily with loop pile carpet.
